Description
Originally organized as one of the first engines in the paid department, Engine 1 entered service in the former quarters of volunteer Northern Liberty Engine 42, at One Centre Street, in lower Manhattan, on July 31, 1865. Disbanded in 1868, they were reorganized five years later at 165 West 29th Street, in midtown Manhattan, on February 17, 1873. They moved to their present quarters, which they share with Ladder 24, at 142 West 31st Street, on November 3, 1946.
