Current firefighting capabilities in Long Beach include 485 uniformed personnel, nearly two-thirds of whom are either certified or former paramedics.

Long Beach was one of the first cities in the State of California to provide paramedic service. Their program is respected as a training model for the rest of the nation.

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics serve in a dual role as firefighters and paramedics. They have 100 paramedics operating out of 16 Long Beach fire stations. Their paramedics work together with firefighters, and both are on 24-hour rotational shifts. We currently have 8 paramedic assessment engine companies (including 1 "Squirt" elevated stream-apparatus) and 1 assessment boat company, which are equipped to handle medical emergencies with a single paramedic on board at all times.

In addition, all Long Beach firefighters are certified as emergency medical technicians (EMT'S) FS.
