When the German High command launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1940, it was optimistically hoped that the Soviet Army would be destroyed before it could retreat into the vastness of the Soviet Union. In the first weeks, the German Army achieved spectacular successes capturing hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers! However, the German leaders had underestimated the resolve of the Soviets and their ability to call up new divisions to replace those that had been destroyed. With the Panzer Divisions at the limits of their supplies and the Infantry Divisions struggling to keep ap, the German Army was facing with the prospects of a winter on the Russian Front. It wouldn't be their last! The German High Command had hoped the campaign would have concluded before winter's onset, thus little consideration had been made for the equipping of their soldiers for the frigid conditions that were yet to come. In 1940 German Mountain troops (Gebirgsjsäger) operating in Norway had deployed ski detachments against the allied forces there. These same divisions then took part in Barbarossa advancing eastwards from Finland. Ski troops proved to be maneuvering through the snowy forests and frozen swamps of the Northern Front that first winter. The obvious advantage of ski troops was their adept ability to relatively quickly across terrain that was otherwise considered impassable.
