Description
A tale of dreamy imagination and fancy, the Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, a young girl who is given a Nutcracker as a Christmas gift at a family celebration. Upset because her brother has jealously broken her gift, she cradles it gently as she sleeps on a sofa near the Christmas tree and begins to dream. Her magical godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, returns to restore his gift to one piece and in an instant, brings all the toys to life. After a dramatic battle between the mice and the toy soldiers, Clara throws her slipper at the Mouse King to save the Nutcracker who then magically becomes a handsome prince. Together they journey to the Enchanted Palace on the Mountain of Sweets. The Sugar Plum Fairy arrives with angels and delicious candies of all sorts. The Prince tells everyone that Clara has saved his life and she is treated to a beautiful display of entertainment in her honor. Together they enjoy the spectacle and as the ballet ends, Clara and the Prince dance away, he to his kingdom and she back to her wonderful home.
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker was first produced in St. Petersburg on December 17, 1892. It was based on the story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman, although the ballet itself followed a somewhat softened version by Alexander Dumas that made it sweeter and more fairy like. Choreographed by the great Pepita, it has become a popular favorite at Christmas time and is performed by national and neighborhood companies alike. 1992 marks the centennial of the ballet's first performance and we celebrate that milestone with the production of Nutcracker Barbie.
