Iceland is called the Land of Fire and Ice because huge ice fields lie next to spouting geysers, hot springs, and volcanoes. Our capital is named Reykjavik, or Smoking Bay, probably because the Vikings who settled here saw steam rising from a distant hot spring as they sailed into the harbor.

The Vikings came here from Norway long ago. They were great shipbuilders and mighty warriors who sailed their open long ships to North America 500 years before Columbus!

In the countryside many of the Viking-type houses still have turf (grass) roofs. Most Icelanders sleep under a saeng (comforter) made from the soft feathers of eider ducks.

Because Iceland is near the North Pole, we have many winter days without sunlight. Icelanders have entertained each other through many a long night with famous poems and stories of Viking kings and heroes.

I hope you'll visit us someday. You can eat a hot dog made of lamb, or try skyr, a yogurt-like dish with a lemony flavor. Come in summer when the sun never sets so you can take walks at night or even picnic-and there are no ants!

Iceland has good salmon fishing, trail- riding on Viking ponies, beautiful scenery and nice people. But come and see for yourself!
