Lucy is just as beloved today as she was nearly fifty years ago when I Love Lucy premiered. What made Lucille Ball a great comedian was her genius at making a fool of herself. How many attractive stars would be willing to "soak up some local color" in a wine vat! One of the all-time favorite episodes, Lucy's Italian Movie helped establish Lucy as the "First Lady of Television."
Seen daily by millions of viewers coast to coast, and in dozens of countries worldwide, I Love Lucy is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. The universal popularity of this one-of-a-kind classic is a tribute to the themes of friendship and love, combined with the humor of the often "sticky" situations shared by Lucy, Ricky, Fred, and Ethel. Here's a highlight from Lucy's Italian Movie, which first aired on April 16, 1956.
Lucy is "discovered" by a famous Italian producer, and decides to learn first hand about grapes for his new film, Bitter Grapes. Wearing peasant clothes, she goes to a winery and is chosen to work in a grape-pressing vat, but soon ends up in a grape throwing fight with another woman. Returning to the hotel, Lucy finds out that the movie has nothing to do with grapes. Ethel is chosen for the role instead, and Lucy once again has botched her chance at stardom.
Lucy is timeless! - Lucy soaks up local color in a grape-pressing vat!
