This was the message sent by the crew of the Apollo 13 after realizing -- 200,000 miles above the Earth -- that they may never return home. The date was April 13, 1970, and the Apollo 13 spacecraft, launched just two days earlier at 1:13 p.m. (13:13 in military time), was experiencing serious technical difficulties that threatened the lives of the three astronauts trapped aboard. An oxygen tank had exploded, releasing two-thirds of the fuel supply into space and cutting off the water, oxygen and electrical supplies of the Apollo 13's Command Module where the astronauts had been living and working. The captain and his crewmates moved into the Lunar Module which was to be their "lifeboat" for the next four days. They immediately abandoned their mission to land on the moon, and were forced to focus on how they were going to get back home alive...if at all.

Relying on the help from Mission Control, the three brave astronauts barely avoided being marooned in space for eternity, and successfully returned to Earth to the relief of millions of Americans and people all over the world.
