Description
The Leichter Panzerspähwagen was light-weight, four-wheel drive armoured reconnaissance vehicle. The vehicle was constructed by assembling an angled armour-plated body on top of a Horch 801 Heavy Car chassis, and adding an open turret that carried a 2cm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon as well as a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. They type was used by reconnaissance battalions of the Panzer divisions and proved quite capable on the paved roads of Western Europe. Unfortunately, its performance was found to be inadquate for off-road use in the Eastern Front and Northern Africa, where Half-Tracks proved more capable.
