It comes as a surprise to many that the German Army used cavalry units through-out the Second World War. In fact a great proportion of the Army's supplies were carried on horse-drawn transport. With the intent to convert to a fully mechanized military, the cavalry had been single brigade in 1935. After seeing action in the Polish Campaign, the value of mounted troops was realized and cavalry strength grew to eventually include several divisions. However the majority of mounted units served as divisional cavalry in Infantry, mountain and light divisions. The obvious usefulness of cavalry was in their mobility, particularly on the vast expanses of the Eastern Front. It was there that they were to excel in their roles of reconnaissance and security.
