Description
THE NC16W HAD A RELATIVELY SHORT, BUT ADVENTUROUS CAREER SPANNING FOUR CONTINENTS AND TENS OF THOUSANDS OF MILES. MANUFACTURED MARCH 13, 1930, AND FLOWN BY L.B. ANDREWS, IT LANDED ONCE AT TUCSON, AZ ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 1930. IT IS NOT A DOCUMENTED FACT, BUT THIS IS THOUGHT TO BE THE FERRY FLIGHT OF THE AIRCRAFT TO ITS FIRST OWNER. NC16W WAS USED FOR "SPORTS FLYING" FOR TWO YEARS BY STAFFORD L. (CASEY) LAMBERT OF MISSOURI. FURTHER HISTORICAL RECORDS SHOW THIS AIRCRAFT WAS THEN ASSIGNED TO J.D. JERNIGAN OF THE TEXACO GENERAL DOMESTIC SALES DEPARTMENT FOR SALES SOLICITATION FROM JULY 2, 1932 UNTIL OCTOBER 24, 1933. HERE, IT RECEIVED ITS TEXACO 16 GRAPHICS HELPING TO PROMOTE THE TEXACO BRAND.
NC16W CHANGED HANDS THREE TIMES BETWEEN 1933-1935. IT WAS OWNED BY WACO SALES AT ROOSEVELT FIELD, NY FROM 1933-34. SOON AFTER, IT RESIDED IN CLEVELAND, OH FROM 1934-35. FINALLY, IT WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CUBAN NAVAL AIR FORCE AND RENAMED "4 DE SEPTIEMBRE". DURING ITS LONG CAREER IN THE CUBAN NAVAL AIR FORCE, IT WAS LATER MODIFIED WITH LONG RANGE FUEL TANKS AND A CUSTOM COCKPIT. NC16W FLEW FROM CUBA, DOWN INTO SOUTH AMERICA, AND THEN ACROSS THE ATLANTIC TO AFRICA AND ENDING THE FLIGHT IN SPAIN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE PLANE WAS REPORTEDLY DESTROYED IN A HANGAR FIRE IN HAVANA SOMETIME IN 1945.
