In 1929, when transcontinental flight was in its infancy, the Spokane Sun-God, piloted by Nick Mamer, with mechanic Art Walker, became the first airplane to make a non-stop round-trip transcontinental flight. A section of the fuselage was removed so that a fuel hose could be received in flight. The Sun-God was fueled with Texaco aviation gasoline and lubricated with Texaco airplane oil, as were the five refueling planes.
On August 15, 1929, the plane lifted off from Spokane's Felts Field at 6:00 p.m. and flew to Belleforte, Pennsylvania before returning to land at Felts Field at 6:01 p.m., August 20. The Spokane Sun-God remained aloft for 120 hours, one minute and 40 seconds, flew 10,000 air miles, and established a world's distance record for a non-stop flight of 7,200 linear miles.
The Buhl Aircraft Company was founded in 1925, and ceased operations in 1933.
