Spreading terror throughout the universe is Planet Doom, under the sinister control of the evil KING ZARKON. Only one planet could stand against him: the idyllic world of Arus, which possessed a powerful weapon of defense: the great robot-warrior Voltron, the Defender of the Universe. Unfortunately, KING ZARKON'S witch HAGGAR managed to neutralize Voltron, using her sorcery to divide the mighty robot into its five component lions, which then helplessly fell to the planet below. Arus' ruler KING ALFOR hid the five lions in remote areas of the planet, where they lay dormant, waiting to someday be reunited.

Years later, five brave Space Explorers, KEITH, PIDGE, HUNK, LANCE and SVEN, are sent to Arus to search for the secret of Voltron. With the assistance of PRINCESS ALLURA, the five recover the five lions and reform Voltron, leading to the first of Voltron's many victories against KING ZARKON's forces. With Voltron's return, peace and prosperity return to Arus, and the VOLTRON FORCE takes up residence on Arus' Castle of Lions, ever vigilant for future attacks from KING ZARKON and Planet Doom.
