Description
Cao Cao (155-220), courtesy name Mengde, also known as Aman, was a native of Xiong County, Pei State (present-day Bozhou, Anhui). He was an outstanding statesman, military strategist, writer, and calligrapher of the late Eastern Han Dynasty, and the architect of the Cao Wei regime during the Three Kingdoms period. During the late Eastern Han Dynasty, he gradually expanded his military power while suppressing the Yellow Turban Rebellion. In 192 AD, he occupied Yan Province, dividing and inducing a portion of the Yellow Turban army in Qing Province to surrender, incorporating them into the "Qing Province Army." In 196 AD, he welcomed Emperor Xian to Xu (east of present-day Xuchang, Henan Province). He used the emperor to command the other warlords, successively suppressing separatist forces such as Lü Bu. After decisively defeating the warlord Yuan Shao at the Battle of Guandu, he gradually unified northern China. In 208 AD, he was promoted to Chancellor and led his army south, but was defeated by the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei at the Battle of Red Cliffs. He was later enfeoffed as King of Wei. His son Cao Pi became emperor, and Cao Cao posthumously honored him as Emperor Wu of Wei. He established military colonies and water conservancy projects in the north, resolving the lack of military power and contributing to the recovery of agricultural production. He employed people based on merit, breaking down the barriers of aristocratic lineage, recruiting lower-middle-class figures from the landlord class, suppressing powerful clans, and strengthening centralized power. The socio-economic development of the regions he ruled recovered and progressed. He was skilled in military strategy, authoring works such as *A Brief Explanation of Sun Tzu's Art of War* and *Essentials of Military Strategy*. He was also a skilled poet; poems like "The Ballad of the Wormwood" and "Watching the Sea" expressed his political aspirations and reflected the suffering of the people at the end of the Han Dynasty, displaying a majestic and poignant spirit. His prose was also clear and concise.
