The rough riders, under the command of Theodore Roosevelt and the black (0 cavalry, under the command of John J. (blackjack) Pershing, along with the 71 New York, made the assault, the experienced Spanish infantrymen, firing from the blockhouses and the surrounding trenchworks, laid down a tremendous field of fire. As the American units climbed the hills, the casualties mounted, kettle hill was taken first by the rough riders, who then joined in the attack on San Juan h during the assault on San Juan hill all the units were completely intermingled-black, white, cavalry, and infantry. The black color sergeant of the 10-cavalry charged up the hill with the standard of the 10" on the way he passed the white color sergeant of the 3rd cavalry who had been shot. He grabbed their standard and carried both to the top of the hill it was heavy fighting all the way, but the Americans prevailed, the assault cost the Spanish 58 killed in action and 170 wounded. The Americans lost 124 killed, including 22 officers and 817 wounded. The final assault was assisted by lt. John parker and his 4 ten-barrel gatling guns which sprayed the heights.
The Spanish fleet sailed out of Santiago harbor and every one of their ships was sunk by the American navy. The war lasted four months and put the world on notice that the United States was now a world power.
