In May 1961, the President and First Lady visited France. A 101-gun salute greeted the Kennedys when they arrived in Paris and large crowd lined the streets yelling "Jacqui!" The Frist Lady immediately won over the French people and did a great service for relations between France and the United States. She gave interviews, including a televised interview in French, visited Notre Dame and Malmaison, and overall charmed the people, the press and president DeGaulle.
The jonquil-yellow silk suit worn at the state luncheon with President and Madame DeGaulle reflected the brightness that Jackie brought to the "City of Light" The jacked featured an asymmetrical side-button closing with a wide welt seam, and the skirt flared slightly a the hem in to A-line. The hat was created of matching fabric.
The trip was important to Oleg Cassini, who designed the ensemble, for France was the fashion capitol of the world, From the outset, Cassini stated that his goal was to dress the First Lady like a queen.
