Description
The Tuskegee Airmen or The Fighting 'Red Tails' as they were also known, were the 332nd FG, the only Negro-manned unit in the US Army Air Force. Much criticism was levelled at the performance of the 332nd by bigoted senior officers who were looking for failure and often denied the Fighter Group the opportunity to shine. In fact it would be fair to describe the 332nd as the most successful Mustang fighter group in the MTO and they matched or exceeded other fighter outfits in the Fifteenth Air Force in terms of mission effectiveness. This P-51D has often been incorrectly assigned to Col. Benjamin Davis, CO of the 332nd FG as he was pictured flying it in a series of publicity shots to show the commanders of the four 15th AAF Mustang groups, but he had merely stood in for Roscoe Brown. Named 'Bunnie' after Brown's daughter, he scored 2 kills in it, one against an Me 262.
