Born out of a word play, Mr. DOB is Takashi Murakami's first character.

Mr. DOB is the basis of Murakami's artistic activity and is the first character created as an 'art icon.' It was created with the examination and analysis of the 'survival secret' and 'universality' of various popular characters as its theme. The name of Mr. DOB is an abbreviation of a phrase. 'Dobojite dobojite oshamanbe (why, why),' which combines an expression used in a comic book 'Inakappe Taisho (General Inakappe)' and the catch-phrase by a popular comedian by the name of Toru Yuri. The name takes the first three letters of the phrase. Mr. DOB has frequented Murakami's artwork as his self-portrait since 1992.
