Description
Leaving the fins of the 50's behind, the 1961 Chevrolet Impala SS 409 was a bright spot to a rather dreary year for the automotive Industry. This newly designed, sleek, bubble topped, aerodynamically sound, monster motor car made quite an impression upon its debut. Automotive Car Life termed this new SS 409 'a triumph in contemporary automobile design'. Chevrolet limited its manufacture to only 142 SS 409's that year. The cost for the new 409 engine option was only $484.00, this modern design, smooth riding 8 cylinder Super Sport with its new console, three blade spinners, heavy duty shocks and a 7000 RPM tachometer was the pioneer in luxury muscle cars. Realizing the potential of this powerful big block, drag racer 'Dyno Don' Nicholson took the entire industry by storm in his '61 Impala by capturing the 'Top Stock Eliminator' title at the Winter Nationals in February of 1961.
