Description
Nestled on the shores of the sparkling Atlantic Ocean is the kingdom of Portugal. The king of this land is wealthy and powerful, yet good and wise. He sends many seafarers on great explorations, which make his country very rich. His empire stretches from the Indies to Brazil during this time which is called The Age of Discovery.
The king's daughter, a lovely princess called Infanta, stands on the balcony of her grand castle and watches as ships depart the harbor. She calls "Adeus, "goodbye in Portuguese. Her dark hair blows softly in the sea winds and her eyes shine as she dreams of one day sailing off like the famed explorers of Portugal: Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, and many others.
Today is an especially joyous day for the princess: outside the palace grounds, there will be a joust, a competition between two mounted knights. Awaiting the arrival of the royal family, the people of the town crowd into viewing stands. Soon, the regal procession begins. The king rides in upon a steed, its saddle lavishly decorated. The queen and princess come next, riding on strong mules (traditionally, high-ranking women in Portugal ride mules), followed by thirty-six ladies and maidens of the court. The royal entourage takes their seats and the tournament begins. Knights on chargers bravely fight their foe with shimmering lances (thrusting weapons with a long wooden shaft and a metal end).
Once the winner is declared, the nobility returns to the palace, their way lit by flaming torches. They go to the Great Hall, its walls decorated with beautiful tapestries (heavy cloths woven with detailed scenes) of silk and gold threads. Here in this wonderful hall, a magnificent feast awaits them. Silver platters hold roasted swans and pheasants, calves and pigs. Musicians play Renaissance instruments called lutes and recorders, Ladies of the court, dressed in brocades and velvets with gold ornaments and pearls, dance with lords. Renaissance Portugal is a magical time for a young maiden!
Princess of the Portuguese Empires Barbie doll was glorious gown of jacquard and burgundy panne velvet, inspired by Renaissance fashion. A delicate cap of golden metallic lace is the final, regal accessory.
