Description
In the ancient world, this was the heart of the mighty empire of the Khmer people, who ruled Indochina from the 9th to the 13th centuries. Now, many years later, in the city of Phnom Penh, palm trees sway along the banks of the Mekong River. Not far away is The Royal Palace, home to the ruling family of Cambodia. Here lives a beautiful, raven-haired princess, daughter of the king.
Springtime is in the air, and soon she will celebrate the 3-day festival of Chaul Chnam, the Cambodian New Year. On the last day of the old year, the entire palace is cleaned and made presentable for the new year. On New Year's Day, children fly kites and many Cambodians pray for a good future.
Today, she stands in the Chan Chaya Pavilion; she often comes here to view parades. She wears a traditional sampot, knee-length wraparound skirt like a sarong. Her ancestors wore these skirts long ago.
The princess is very happy, as she will attend a performance of classical Khmer dancing. This ancient heritage has been passed down 1,000 years. Ram Vong, the traditional national dance, features slow, graceful movements of the hands and arms; this dignified dance involves almost no movement of the feet. Beautiful music starts, played on gongs, drums, flutes, wooden xylophones, and tros, or one-stringed violins. The dancing begins and the princess is mesmerized.
