Anubis is an ancient Egyptian jackal-headed god of the dead, mummification, and the afterlife, whose history dates to the First Dynasty (c. 3100-2890 BC). Initially the preeminent lord of the underworld, his role shifted to conductor of souls and embalmer after the rise of Osiris. Anubis oversaw the weighing of the heart ceremony, a key judgment in the afterlife, and protected tombs from grave robbers. His image, often a black jackal or jackal-headed man, symbolized the fertile soil of the Nile and the dead
