Henry "Lou Gehrig was nicknamed the "Iron Horse" as a testament to his durability as a player. In the span of 15 seasons (1925-1939), Gehrig set an incredible record of playing in the most consecutive games ever (2,130). This enduring record remained unmatched by any other player until Cal Ripken Jr. surpassed it in 1995.

Lou Gehrig played his entire career with the New York Yankees, which included playing in seven World Series where he achieved a batting average of 361 and hit 10 home runs. In 1931, he set the American League record for the most runs batted in (184), a record that still stands today.

A teammate of the great Babe Ruth, Gehrig also led the American League in three separate batting categories at the end of the 1934 season (most runs batted in, most home runs, and highest batting average). He is also one of only 12 players to hit four consecutive home runs in one game, which he did on June 3, 1932. Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, Gehrig's life was cut short when he died two years later of a rare form of sclerosis, the type of which has since become known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease."
