Description

In a kung (palace) in Seoul, a lovely girl looks over her city. Her black hair shines in the bright spring sunshine. Today she may go on a journey in Seoul. When she travels, she is carried in a palanquin (a covered couch carried on poles) and all the people of her country kowtow (kneel down and bow) to her as she passes. Koreans greet her by saying anyonghashimnikka. When they leave, they say annyinghi kyeseyo, which means leave in peace. Daughter of the emperor and empress of Korea, she is called the Gong-Ju or princess. She is a beautiful child, dressed in her hanbok, the traditional Korean costume.

As the princess, she learns proper royal etiquette. She must be respectful and dignified. But she has fun in the palace, too. She loves to play Chang-gi, a game similar to chess, but with a different board, pieces, and rules. The rules are easy to learn, but she works hard to become a good, strategic player.

The princess is happy because soon it will be time to celebrate Sol Nal, New Year's Day. Sol Nal happens on the first day of spring - the first day of the first month of the new lunar year. The princess and her family honor their heritage. Then, the day is a celebration, especially for children. Boys fly kites. The princess loves to play yut nori (a stick game). Beautiful music is played on gongs and drums. Sometimes dance troupes come to perform and encourage everyone to dance, too. Sol Nal is a wonderful day in Korea!
