The 1920s were the Golden Age of Fire Engines. The era of horse-drawn, steam-powered equipment was coming to an end The internal-combustion engine, the new form of horsepower, was essential in responding quickly and effectively to fires, particularly in big city buildings. Soon, companies such as American La France, Mack, Seagrave and Ahrens-Fox were in fierce competition and they continued to advance the safety, ability and quality of fire fighting Ahrens-Fox was a leader in fire fighting innovation and engineering. The company, which produced its first motorized piston pumper in 1911, was the first to go to a 12 volt electrical system, use pneumatic tires instead of rubber, implement a shaft drive system, install a booster tank and develop a double bank ladder rack. Many of the companies that created fire fighting vehicles in the 20s and beyond had a particular look that made their engines instantly recognizable.

For Ahrens-Fox, the mammoth positive displacement pump was placed directly over the front axle, well ahead of the radiator. The success of Ahrens-Fox at the fire scene as well as its unique configuration-a redesigned spherical air vessel and a pump positioned in front-made Ahrens-Fox one of the most popular and easily recognized engines of the time. The company had been building various models, such as the P-5-2. J-S-2 and the N-S-4 for large cities and small towns, all of which were avail able in 1927.
