Fred Dibnah's 'Betsy'
Fred Dibnah is well known throughout the UK for his life and work as a steeplejack and steam engine enthusiast. Fred shot to stardom in 1979 after he was the subject of a television documentary which featured his spectacular method of felling disused chimneys and the restoration of his steam roller. Fred has now featured in 19 documentaries and his work includes restoring chimneys, church steeples and steam engines all over the UK. Fred's Aveling and Porter Steam Road Roller was built in 1910 and is a 10 ton single cylinder type. When it was purchased in 1963 for £175, it was virtually scrap and it took 10 years to restore. He named it 'Alison' after his first wife but following their divorce in 1986 the engine was renamed 'Betsy' after Fred's mother.
