Vlad Dracula, the "Impaler Prince" Every legend has some foundation in reality. The tale of the fictional vampire Count Dracula, had its origins in the story of a real-life late-medieval Romanian Prince, Vlad Tepes Dracula. Although the historical Dracula did not drink the blood of his victims like a vampire, his actual record of sadistic atrocities was an appropriate inspiration for the cruel character of myth and legend. Vlad Dracula was born in 1431 in Romania. His father, Vlad Dracul, was at that time the military governor of Transylvania, appointed by the Hungarian King Sigismund. In 1437, his father used force to make himself, Prince of Wallachia, a Romanian province.
