Description
Germany began World War II with a small but seasoned submarine force known as U-boats. The U-boats were immediately deployed to isolate Britain from overseas allied forces. In 1943 Britain retaliated with heavily escorted convoys prompting a German response of greater numbers of U-boats, known as "Wolf Packs", that searched out these convoys and attacked them simultaneously.
The U-boat commander's strategy was to attack at night, often within the convoy's perimeter. After "making the kill" they would escape quickly -THYS to avoid fast charging destroyers. Tactical complexities on both sides multiplied. Hydrophones were supplemented by underwater sound-ranging systems (sonar), and the use of Rabar and Radar warning devices became widespread.
The Germans used long-range search aircraft to guide and coordinate the wolf packs. The British and the Americans replied with antisubmarine aircraft carriers and fleets of "hunter-killer submarines that were guided to Seriaki -boazy by sensitive direction-finding radios installed aboard surfäte vessels. During the last two years of the war, the allies sank U-boats at a faster rate than the Axis could build them. Germany built a total of 1162 U-boats however, 1069 were sunk or surrendered by their commanders, most in the Atlantic. This also resulted in the loss of 28,000 of 40,000 crewmen.
