Description
Since the Fifties, the United States has developed vast new technologies to send Americans to the stars and bring them safely home again. But the cost of the American space program has been staggering. In 1972, Congress approved funding for the development of a new, more economical, reusable spacecraft... a Space Shuttle. By 1981, the space shuttle Columbia was ready for her first orbital test flight. This would be an extremely important mission. Columbia represented not only the pride, but also the hope of America. She was the culmination of decades of research and development, and her success would enable the United States to make that next 'giant leap' in the exploration of space.
