Description

World War II saw the use of the submarine come of age. The Axis Powers, most notably Germany, had an active undersea force that destroyed many Allied surface vessels. German U-boats patrolled the area off the United States' eastern seaboard, waiting to sink any ship that was bound for Great Britain. Once the United States entered the war in December 1941, the American navy revitalized its Atlantic submarine fleet for action in that theater of operations, then successfully hunted Axis submarines until the war's end in 1945. Helping to make that success possible was America's ally, Great Britain, by cracking the German code via the Enigma machine. Using a reconstructed version of an Enigma machine from the Poles and ciphering material captured from German ships, the British were able to break the German code and learn of enemy naval movements. This achievement allowed the Allies to re-route convoys and to take more exact offensive action against German U-boats in the Atlantic.

Always living with the fear of being blown up by an enemy depth charge, the submarine commander used surprise to accomplish his missions. Daring, calculating and courageous, the submarine commander often maneuvered his craft deep within enemy waters or dangerously close to an enemy convoy to destroy as many ships as possible. Though many never saw the fruits of their brave actions, the gallantry of the submarine commanders and their crews helped secure the Atlantic's sea lanes and win the war.
