Description
The most legendary Harley-Davidson® of World War II was the 1942 WLA 45. It was the most widely manufactured and could be found in all facets of armed conflict. Often decorated with division colors, these combat cycles were provided with standard military equipment, including rifle holsters attached to the fork. They were everywhere, used for escorting convoys, as rapid liaison, and by the military police. They were even used occasionally at the front and for reconnaissance missions.
The WLA 45 was an amazingly reliable machine built tough and battle-ready. The large and well-protected air filter enabled the bikes to cross shallow fords. A steel plate was fitted under the lower part of the frame to protect the engine, and the chain was also protected by a large, strong guard. An internal lubrication system allowed cooling during long periods of use at low speed, and a rugged metal rack was provided to house a two-way radio weighing 40 pounds.
