At the outbreak of the war, outnumbered Republic of Korea forces had little success against the veteran units of the invading North Korean People's Army. The North Korean Army was well-equipped with Soviet weaponry and seemed unstoppable-until the first U.S. Marine units arrived. U.S. Marines were among the first to be targeted by the Chinese Communists who entered the war in support of North Korea. Throughout the war, Marines served with distinction, first halting the advance, then pushing back the North Korean forces. Ultimately, the conflict reaffirmed for Americans the necessity of a combat-ready Marine Corps.
