The M-1 Abrams Tank Commander is battle-hardened with a distinguished record of maturity, judgment, and initiative. In most cases, the Commander is a Sergeant with extensive field experience. His command consists of a Driver, a Gunner, and a Loader. They and their tank comprise about 1/4 of a platoon. The Commander may sit or stand when the tank is involved in an operation. While the standing position affords a better view of the battlefield, it also exposes him to enemy fire. Either the Commander or the Gunner can engage a target, however the Commander can override the Gunner and assume control of the gun. The command position is also armed with its own heavy machine gun. Although the .45 M3 submachine gun is obsolete in some areas, it is still effectively used by armored vehicle crews.
