Description

The first Royal Marine Commando unit was formed on Valentine's Day in 1942 and was immediately regarded as one of Britain's elite, assigned to carry out the most hazardous of tasks - taking out enemy strong points. Their mark of distinction was the green beret, indicating that those who wear it have attended and passed a grueling and physically demanding test of endurance. They display the commando qualities of teamwork and optimism in times of adversity.
The Commandos are most famous for their heroic feats in World War II, especially on June 6, 1944, D-Day, when they landed in Normandy. As part of the massive Allied effort to establish a beachhead on the European continent, they were one of Britain's key offensive strike forces. Commando Unit No. 48's objective initially was to link up with the No. 41 Commando unit and secure the Bayeux-Caen road. In order to make their way to Caen they had to land at Juno Beach, an area of Normandy that was primarily used for Canadian operations. Specially made D-D tanks, amphibious Sherman tanks fitted with uniquely designed flotation screens, were instituted to transport the Commandos through the Channel. They contended with the loss of about half the D-D tanks that were intended to give them cover, as well as horrific tides that took the lives of many of the men before they even reached the shore. Battling the untouched German defense was harder than expected but the No. 48 Royal Marine Commandos put up a fight all the way inland against the German forces. By the end of the Juno Beach attack, the courageous fighting of the Commandos had opened the way for 22,000 men to land on the beach. Next, they secured the Bayeux-Caen road with the help of the Canadian and American military and fought heroically to repel the German thrust.
To aid them in their courageous fight in Normandy, the Royal Marines were equipped with the popular Bren Mark I Light Machine Gun, which has a reputation as one of the most accurate machine guns in history and is still used by the Royal Navy today.
The story of D-Day is not complete without remembering the British Royal Marine Commandos, who are credited with stopping the German counterattack and helping to pave the way in breaking through enemy defenses.
It's unclear whether the Royal Marine Commandos wore insignia patches on their camouflaged jackets during the D-Day operations. Consumers may utilize the patches provided to modify their Commando to suit individual taste.
