G.I. Joe Navy Deep Sea Diver Figure Real Diving Action #81882 Hasbro 2003 NRFB
Description
Navy Deep Sea Diver
The challenges of deep sea diving are many for the divers of the United States Navy, who respond with fortitude and enthusiasm each time a mission takes them below the ocean's surface. Navy divers perform salvage and recovery operations of downed vessels and aircraft, repairs, demolitions, searches to locate underwater objects, and rescue missions. During their work in the dark and chilling depths of the sea, Navy divers wear dry suits and use pneumatic drills, wrenches and other equipment, depending on their mission. A hose from a surface ship supplies them with a helium-oxygen breathing mixture, which is used instead of air to reduce the adverse physical and mental effects of the extreme water pressure associated with deep dives. They also carry an air tank in case of an emergency. Because of the high water pressure, divers must undergo decompression each time they ascend to the surface to avoid the painful and even life-threatening condition commonly known as the bends. Over the years, the Navy has researched and developed new technologies to improve the safety and capabilities of deep sea diving, thus expanding the kinds of missions that are possible - from recovering historical artifacts to repairing ships under combat conditions.
