Description
They came from all corners of America. From the wheat fields of Nebraska. The streets of Chicago. The mountains of West Virginia. Some clenched their rifles. Others nervously adjusted their equipment. Some glanced at pictures of a girl back home. It was D-Day. H-Hour. Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of German-occupied France, was underway.
On June 6, 1944, the largest armada in history assembled off the coast of Normandy to carry out a daring plan masterminded by American General Dwight D. Eisenhower. A few miles away stood the heavily-fortified "Atlantic Wall." The Germans, under the direction of the legendary General Erwin Rommel, spent months preparing for the Allied invasion they knew would come. They used tons of concrete and steel to build bunkers and gun emplacements. They laid millions of mines. They strung miles of barbed wire. The Allies knew what they were up against, understanding all too well that they would have to fight with all they possessed for every last inch of ground.
