Description

Born August 31, 1918 in the small town of Charleroi Pennsylvania, Paige was the son of a railroad construction worker who grew up during the time of the Great Depression. A red-blooded young man, Mitchell left home at the age of 18 to join the Marines in search of adventure. Following recruit training at Parris Island South Carolina in 1936, he went aboard the battleship USS Wyoming through the Panama Canal, the Philippines, Shanghai, Peking, Tientsin China, and then Cuba. With the start of World War II, Paige became a machine gunner in the 7th Regiment of the newly formed 1st Marine Division. He was quickly promoted to platoon sergeant and became one of the 4,000 men to participate in what would become one of the most significant landings of the war: the invasion at Guadalcanal located in the Solomon Islands.
