Description
Allied forces could not have won World War II if it were not for the efforts of the skilled and dedicated bomber crews flying missions over the treacherous shies of a Europe under Nazi siege. On a global scale, a total of 2,362,800 combat sorties were launched, pummeling the surface below with over 2 million tons of bombs. The Air Force, second only to the infantry in terms of casualties, saw over 51,000 of its soldiers killed, wounded, missing, or captured during the conflict. Despite the startling number of casualties, Allied air forces played a significant role in releasing Europe from Hitler's military stronghold.
