Description
Born as the Continental army in the tumultuous days of pre-Revolution America, the U.S. Army Infantry has evolved over the past 200+ years into the supreme fighting force that prevailed in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. The August, 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi forces precipitated the most impressive deployment of U.S. armed forces in modern warfare. Upon executing a massive troop build-up which began immediately after the invasion, U.S. and coalition ground forces played an important part in the operation even before the ground war began, with units constantly probing and hitting the Iraqi front lines during the portion of the engagement that was dubbed the air war. When the actual ground war was launched on G Day. February 24, 1991, infantry forces swiftly overran the Iraqis, who discovered they were no match for the superbly-trained ground troops. Only four days after this portion of the war was staged, the President and Commander in Chief ordered a suspension of all offensive combat. Kuwait was liberated, Operation Desert Storm was history, and the U.S. Army Infantry soldiers who served were considered heroes.
