NAVY FOOTBALL LINEBACKER

At the beginning of each football season, the United States Naval Academy of Annapolis sets its course for gridiron victory. It's been a Naval tradition since the team was formed in 1879. Since that first season, the Navy team has successfully scuttled a long list of opponents and captured a number of trophies. There are scores of notable Annapolis "Midshipmen' among the ranks of the All-Americans, and two Navy players have even brought home the coveted Heisman: Roger Staubach in 1963 and Joe Bellino in 1960. A number of Midshipmen have dropped anchor in the National Football Hall of Fame over the years, and the team has even secured a National Championship. Each season, Navy sails against a fleet of worthy adversaries.

However, nothing sends the Midshipmen to battle stations like the annual contest with their long-standing rivals: the Army 'Cadets' of West Point. The rivalry dates back to 1890 when the brand new team from the United States Military Academy had its very first game, Navy won that first meeting between the two squads, but the rivalry remains a heated one to this day-the teams remain virtually neck and neck in their battle for supremacy. Football fans of every level and from every era readily acknowledge that the annual meeting between the Midshipmen and the Cadets makes for one of the most intense and emotional games of the entire season.
