Description
Every once in a while, a citizen comes about who is seen by many as the embodiment of the American ethos. This individual directly reflects the essential qualities and spirit envisioned by the Founding Fathers - an impenetrable belief in freedom, equality, and opportunity. For the latter end of the twentieth century, one such individual is retired U.S. Army General Colin L. Powell.
General Colin Powell was born on April 5, 1937 in Harlem, the son of Maude and Luther Powell, who immigrated to the United States from Jamaica. His family moved to the South Bronx when he was four, and he was raised there with his family, who supplied him with a set of values and beliefs which still continue to gulde him. Powell received his education through the New York City Public Schools, and graduated from Morris High School. He attended the City College of New York, earning a degree in geology. While at CCNY, he also participated and excelled in the ROTC program there. Upon graduation in June of 1958, Powell received a commission as an Army second lieutenant. He has also received an M.B.A. from The George Washington University.
