Few military units have enjoyed the reputation for romance and high adventure as the French Foreign Legion. While much of its colorful history is factual, a number of misconceptions about the Legion persist. It is true that one does not have be French to join, and speaking French is not a requirement. Even French citizens must enlist as foreigners, be it Belgian, French Canadian, Swiss or Monegasque. After five years, all Legionnaires in good standing are eligible for French citizenship.
