Description
The Special Air Service, or S.A.S., was formed during World War II as the British desert response to General Rommel's Africa campaign. David Stirling created this elite military unit to distract and harass the enemy behind the lines. Using hit and run tactics, the S.A.S. raided one Luftwaffe airfield after another, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of German aircraft. The over-extended Afrika Corps were caught off-guard and kept off-balance. Proven effective as a fighting unit, the S.A.S. turned to intelligence gathering and expanded operations to include the European theater. The S.A.S. continued to grow and evolve, earning a reputation worthy of the unit motto, 'Who Dares Wins.' After World War II, the S.A.S. turned its formidable intelligence gathering skills to the search for Nazi war criminals.
Since its formation, the S.A.S. has successfully completed a wide range of military missions. Expert at deep penetration and respected by the intelligence community, the S.A.S. has been an effective force in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. The unit has often been called upon to provide protection for heads of state. But perhaps the unit's greatest tribute has been the many requests the S.A.S. has received to train foreign special forces.
