Also known as the Battle of the Ardennes (for the region in southern Belgium where the fighting took place), the battle lasted from December 16, 1944 through January 16, 1945. The Allied forces had invaded Normandy in the summer of '44, and pushed forward across France in pursuit of the enemy. But their drive was halted by the Germans, who attacked the Allies at Ardennes with two powerful Panzer Armies. The attacks allowed the Germans to push back General Eisenhower's forces, and an Allied victory looked bleak. But the Allies didn't surrender. They fought back and eventually overtook the Germans, who had been weakened by a lack of supplies. General Patton's forces entered the battle, and the Germans were soon defeated in one of their last futile attempts to win the war.
