Description

The paratroopers of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division came from average American homes. They worked in cornfields, coal mines, and grocery store stockrooms. These unlikely heroes were molded, trained, and banded together to form an elite fighting force ready to take on one of the most desperate and perilous missions of World War II -- the liberation of Europe. They would be dropped behind enemy lines in the pre-dawn darkness of D-Day, to spearhead the greatest invasion force of the 20th Century.

At 23:10 hours on June 5, 1944, C-47s lifted the 101st skyward, toward their well-entrenched, battle-hardened enemy. Each paratrooper carried the 100-150 pounds of equipment, including M1 carbine rifles with folding stocks. They were the only fighters in the war to use this specialized weapon, and they would need every advantage they could find. Their destination was Normandy. Their mission: capture the inland roads and causeways and pave the way for Operation Overlord -- the massive Allied invasion of Europe.

But first, they had to survive the drop. Dangerous under the best of conditions, the mission required the paratroopers of the 101st to leap from a plane traveling at 150 m.p.h. or more, from an altitude of only 600 feet. They were jumping into blackness, completely unaware of the hostile terrain below. For all they knew, they were dropping right into the enemy's hands. The only light they had was provided by savage anti-aircraft fire that, for long terrifying moments, blazed in the sky around them. When they reached the ground they knew they would be cut off, surrounded by the enemy, and completely on their own. It would be hours before the invasion force caught up with them.

A full five hours before the main Allied invasion force hit the beaches, the paratroopers of the 101st "hit the silk." With grim determination, they leapt into the darkness and onto the pages of military history where they are proudly remembered, and still known today, as the "Screaming Eagles."
