Description
On the lush, green island of Ireland, the sound of the Irish harp, fiddle, and bodhran reverberate. The Irish step-dance began in the 18th century in rural towns. Now, the "ghillie" or "step" is known internationally and young girls compete in feiseanna, or step-dancing competitions. This is an exciting event, that reflects all the pride that so many feel for their Gaelic heritage!
Céili originally meant a group of neighbors gathering together in someone's house for fun, music, and dancing, and, of course, storytelling, as the Irish have always enjoyed the gift of blarney.
Today céili is celebrated as informal dancing. A fiddler plays a reel and everyone dances!
One beautiful redheaded lass loves to dance in the céili. Dressed in a dress as green as a shamrock and decorated with Celtic inspired designs, she loves to perform wonderful traditional reels, hornpipes, and step dances. Maybe one day she will win a feis!
