Description
Known as the "Big Red One", they first saw action in June, 1917 when elements of the First Division Artillery fired the first US shell against the Germans.
Twenty-five years later in 1943, they once again saw service against the German Army in the North Africa and Sicily campaigns.
D-Day, June 6th, 1944 again found the First Division in action, and they were among the first troops to land at Omaha Beach.
As testament to their courage during the war, members of the Big Red 1 received 20,752 medals, of which 16 were the Congressional Medal of Honor.
