Description

Balthasar Woll was perhaps the single most important factor in the great success of Tiger 'Ace', Michael Wittmann. When Unterscharführer Wittmann was assigned to command a Tiger I in the heavy panzer company of Leibstandarte Division, he was very fortunate to have Woll designated as his gunner. Wittmann's calm, self-assured leadership and Woll's uncanny skill with the 88mm gun proved to be a formidable combination. 'Bobby' Woll was born September ist, 1922 in Wemmetsweiller in the Saarland. After his schooling, he worked as a laborer and electrician before enlisting in the Waffen in August 1941. By the time he had joined Wittman's crew, Sturmmann Woll had already earned the Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Silver Wound Badge while serving with Totenkopf Division.

Operation Zitadelle (battle of Kursk) was their first action together. By the time they were withdrawn from the battle, the Tigers of 13th Panzer Company had destroyed 151 Soviet tanks, 87 heavy antitank guns and 4 artillery batteries. Of this total, Wittmann's crew alone accounted for 30 tanks, 28 antitank guns and 2 artillery batteries. While LSSAH was in Italy for refitting and reorganization, Woll received the Iron Cross 1st class. There is little argument that Michael Wittman was the most successful tank commander of World War Two. With the destruction of 141 Enemy tanks and 132 anti-terk guns to his credit, his accomplishments were extraordinary!
