By October 1944 the Red Army had pushed its way into Hungary and swept onward to the Danube River south of Budapest. The Soviets finally surrounded the city on 26 December and were ordered to capture the city immediately. Among the defending units were 8. Kavallerie-Division 'Florian Geyer', 22. Freiwilligen-Kavallerie-Division 'Maris Theresia and elements of 18. Freiwilligen-Banzer-Grenadier-Division 'Horst Wessel. The encircled garrison struggled to hold the city in the face of a massively superior opponent. On 26 December the VI. Panzer-Korps, comprised of 3. Panzer-Division 'Totenkopf and 5. Panzer-Division 'Viking' were withdrawn from the defence of Warsaw and rushed south to relieve the trapped defenders of Budapest. The assault was launched on New Year's Day 1945 and by 10 January, they had reached the Budapest airport. Success seemed possible. However, Russian resistance stiffened and the battle raged until month's end before the attack was called off.
