Description
The Königstiger, or Kingtiger, was a powerful German tank fielded during the latter stages of WWII. It followed on from where the already formidable Tiger I left off, offering sloping armor and a powerful 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 antitank cannon. This long-barreled weapon was more than capable of destroying any Allied tank on the battlefield at long range. The Tiger II weighed 68.5 tonnes and featured armor up to 180mm thick on the front. Kingtigers were issued to heavy tank battalions, and they first saw combat in Normandy in July 1944. There were two slight variations on the Kingtiger (also known by the nomenclature Sd.Kfz.182) owing to different prototypes being created by the companies Porsche and Henschel. The latter was the primary production version of this remarkable tank, and it possessed an angular turret and overlapping road wheels. A total of just 492 Kingtigers were eventually manufactured owing to heavy bombing of the Henschel factory, but they served right till the last dying days of the Third Reich, including the bitter Battle of Berlin.
