Once upon a time, in a kingdom beneath the sea, lived a beautiful mermaid princess named Ariel. She dreamt of being human, but she was forbidden by her father, King Triton, to have anything to do with people. But nothing could stop the princess and her dream, until one night...

...when Ariel sees the handsome Prince Eric on a passing ship and falls in love at first sight. When a storm suddenly comes up and sweeps Eric overboard, Ariel rescues him, sings him awake, then dives from sight, leaving him alone with only the memory of her lovely voice.

Deeply in love, Ariel asks Ursula the Sea Witch to make her human so she can be with Eric. In exchange for Ariel's voice, the evil Ursula agrees. But there is one condition: if Eric does not fall in love with Ariel in three days' time, she must be Ursula's slave forever.

On the third day, all seems lost for Ariel. Then, Scuttle. the silly seagull discovers Ursula's trickery! As the sun sets, Ariel's friends, Flounder and Sebastian, help Eric battle Ursula to save Ariel from doom. Victorious at last, Eric and Ariel wed and sail off to live happily ever after.
